Ukraine increases brandy alcohol and brandy exports by 30%

In 2013, Ukraine increased the export of brandy alcohol and brandy by nearly one-third. Positive trends in the industry were possible due to systematic government policy maintained for several years. Thus, as of Jan 1, 2014, vineyard areas in Ukraine were increased to 64,200 hectares at personal farms and 77,600 hectares at agricultural enterprises. The most of vineyards are currently located in Crimea — 25,000 hectares, and in Odessa region — 25,500 hectares, ForUm reports referring to the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Ukrainian Cabinet.
Also, imports of grapes and wine materials to Ukraine was reduced, which is a good indicator for the industry. According to Alexander Demidov, Director of Agricultural Department at Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, increased export of wine materials and brandy spirits is a positive sign. «Thus, at large winemaking exhibition in Russia, which involved the major manufacturers in the industry, Ukraine was ranked 4th and 5th, whereas it held the 6th and 8th place before that,» Demidov said.
Viticulture and winemaking require permanent state support. «Planting of vineyards and orchards, and building of greenhouses is not a quick-return business; so, this industry cannot develop without government support. Our Ministry closely interacts with deputies and members of the government, and constantly works on industry issues,» said Victor Kostenko, Head of Department for Development of Horticulture, Viticulture, and Winemaking at Agricultural Department.
Also, according to government analysts, the Ministry developed some amendments, initiatives, and actions to increase planting of grapes, improve the material-technical base of wine growers, and prevent obstacles to development of the industry.
