UN agriculture agency calls for vigilance as bird flu increases in China
21.01.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Countries neighbouring China have been urged to remain vigilant as A(H7N9) strain of bird flu virus increases in China, UN Radio reports.
The warning has come from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which also notes that Chinese New Year celebrations are approaching.
The agency warns that the festivities for the occasion provide opportunity for the further spread of the virus and human exposure.
It says millions of people and poultry are expected to be on the move and many households will slaughter poultry at home to celebrate the New Year.
FAO is urging countries neighbouring China to be also vigilant of other bird flu viruses, such as the highly contagious H5N1.
The number of human infections with H7N9 virus has increased considerably since late December in East and Southeast China, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
