21.05.2013 09:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called for momentum to achieve the Millennium Development Goals agreed by world leaders in 2000 to improve peoples lives around the world, UN Radio reports.
Mr. Ban spoke in the Mozambican capital, Maputo at an event under the theme «The Future we want-Millennium Development Goals Post 2015 and Agenda 2025.»
He said goals, known as MDGs have achieved results with 600 million people lifted from extreme poverty and better conditions for 200 million people living in slums.
On the education front, Secretary-General Ban said a record number of children are in primary school with an equal number of girls and boys for the first time.
«More women and babies are surviving childbirth. Investments in fighting malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis have saved millions of lives. Here in Mozambique, most children are getting early schooling. Women are becoming empowered as never before. Nearly 40 per cent of parliamentarians are women in this country. This is remarkable. There are still ten countries in the world where not single women parliamentarians are represented in the national assembly,» Mr. Ban said.
However, Mr. Ban pointed out, despite its successes, Mozambique still faces challenges.
He said more than half of the population is below the national poverty line, over 40 per cent of children are stunted or undernourished, half of all women cannot read, HIV/AIDS is still a major challenge and many women still die in childbirth.
