PM Azarov: Ukraine purchasing 87.5% less gas from Russia in 2013

19.04.2013 17:12 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Ukraine has been steadily reducing its purchases of overpriced Russian natural gas by conserving energy, increasing domestic production, and finding cheaper alternative sources of gas in Europe, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said, NRCU reports. «This year we purchased 87.5% less gas from Russia than we did a year earlier,» Azarov said on Friday at a government confidence session in parliament called by the opposition. In 2012, Ukraine purchased just 33 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, 12 bcm less than in 2011, he said. Azarov pointed out that the 2009 gas agreement signed by Yulia Tymoshenko’s government committed Ukraine to purchasing 52 bcm of gas a year. Ukraine’s gas imports from Russia in the first quarter of 2013 totaled 7.1 bcm, 17.4% less than in the same period last year. National oil and gas company Naftogaz drastically reduced purchases of Russian gas in the first three months, from $992.6 million in January, to $162 million in February and to $83 million in March. Last year purchases in those months totaled $808 million, $1.3 billion and $865 million respectively. Naftogaz Ukrainy has not purchased any Russian gas in April because it has sufficient reserves in underground storage, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavytsky said. A number of market watchers told Interfax that Azarov most likely had in mind purchases by Naftogaz Ukrainy when he spoke of an 87.5% decrease in gas imports from Russia.
