AMCU Begins Checks Of Markets Of Grain And Bread
17.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - Following commission of President Leonid Kuchma the Antimonopoly Committee began studying and checks of markets of grain, flour and bread aiming to detect and liquidate monopolistic breachings of and aiming to prevent increase of bread prices. This was disclosed in the AMCU statement given to Ukrainian News. "Since beginning of April the committee … is studying the situation of grain, flour and bread markets," reads the statement of the committee’s press service. The press service of the AMCU reports that the committee studies markets in all regions. In particular, AMCU studies reasons of crisis on the grain market, paying special attention to grain export and not ruling out anti-competitive actions of the market participants. "The question "Where did the grain go?" the committee will study thoroughly," the press service cites the AMCU chairman Oleksii Kostusev. The AMCU hopes to get results of the checks on May 1. After the investigation, the AMCU intends to take stern measures against infringers. The press service informs that the AMCU hopes that its checks would contribute to keeping the prices on the market at today’s level. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, in early March because of the increase of prices for grain and flour market by 20% Kuchma directed the Chief General Prosecutor Sviatoslav Piskun to look into the situation on the grain market, the reasons of grain deficit in certain regions under conditions of its sufficient production, facts of monopolization on this market, artificial holdback of grain sales, as well as pumping up demand and prices for grain and products of its processing. General Prosecutor Office found numerous breachings on the grain market, and started more than 200 criminal cases. In particular, the GPO accused ex-Vice Prime Ministers Leonid Kozachenko of abuse of power, promotion of grain export at underestimated prices, and launched a criminal case against him. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also began checking participants of the grain market.
