MAIS DEMONSTRATED NEW POSSIBILITIES OF ITS OWN HYBRIDS
During the seminar held August 16 in Novooleksiyvka village, Ukrainian plant breeding company Mais (Synelnikove, Dnipropetrovsk region) demonstrated to agrarians and dealers maize hybrids of its own selection grown as on dry land so under drip irrigation. Mais experts told the seminar participants about high-quality technologies of the hybrids’ cultivation and showed areas where different hybrids had been tested; experts also demonstrated hybrids’ response to different doses of mineral fertilizers under drip irrigation. Besides, the seminar participants also discussed the maize market tendencies and specifics of the maize production under condition of the changeable climate. Thus, in particular, while examining the seed production fields and demonstration fields, producers and plant breeders discussed the potential of different hybrids and the productivity of the single hybrids depending on the sowing date, fertilizer amount, planting density and, most importantly, on the moisture sufficiency during the growth period. The seminar participants also actively discussed the possibilities of the future kinds of irrigation, including the drip irrigation. While making the report, Mais Board Chairman, plant breeder Viktor Borisov admitted this hybrids’ testing season has passed under condition of severe moisture deficit; however, he said it became possible to elaborate an algorithm for optimal care about the plants as well as adopt a number of important decisions on drip irrigation. At the same time, Mr. Borisov demonstrated to the seminar participants the results of the testing of the Mais-grown hybrids in the European Union; he said Mais is, upon whole, satisfied with the testing results. «In fact, testing showed that our hybrids can yield up to 20 MT per hectare. So, Mais is ready to promote its products to the European markets,» Mr. Borisov said. Besides, Mr. Borisov also emphasized Mais is going to widen its presence on the markets of neighboring Russia and Belarus. He admitted within this year Mais had sown RF-produced sunseeds’ hybrids on a part of its cultivation areas. He also said Mais is going to develop cooperation with RF partners through promoting of its maize hybrids to the RF market.
As in the last year (when Mais had demonstrated its new hybrids as well as told about specifics of the maize cultivation under the hydrothermal stress), this year over 100 seminar participants also could personally watch and compare the state of the maize hybrids grown under different cultivation conditions.
For reference:
Research and Production Farm Economy Company Mais is one of those Ukrainian leading private research centers specializing in maize breeding which have a complete closed cycle of seeds’ production: from performing research works on hybrid maize development and creation up to seeds’ production and self-dependent sales. Within 20 years of its active development, Company Mais has brought to the markets of Ukraine and other countries over 60 maize hybrids (FAO 160-FAO 500 maturity groups) suitable for growing in all soil-climatic zones of maize cultivation; hybrids are characterized with high productivity, drought resistance and high speed of grains’ drying within ripening period. Since 1999, Mais is the only associate member of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) among all CIS countries. In 2013, Mais became a full member of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).
