UN chief urges Member States to contribute generously to Central Emergency Response Fund

As to UN Radio,
the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on last week Friday called on Member States to contribute generously to a fund that helps deliver relief assistance to emergencies around the world.
Mr. Ban spoke at a High-Level Conference on the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) established by the UN General Assembly seven years ago.
The Secretary-General said that since 2006 CERF has dispersed more than $3.2 billion to emergencies in 88 countries.
He told government officials that a growing number of people around the world are in need and humanitarian actors are struggling to keep pace.
The Secretary-General Ban said that in 2013, CERF allocated $175 million, the highest amount ever for under-funded emergencies, thanks to the generous support of Member States.
«These are uncertain economic times for many but I urge you to give generously and to give early so CERF can help as many people as possible in 2014. This year, so far, you have given $435 million close to our target of $450 million. Let us match and exceed this figure in 2014,» Mr. Ban admitted.
Mr. Ban said in return for Member States’ generosity, the United Nations pledges that it will make the absolute best use of their precious contributions.
He promised that the donations will be met with the highest standards of vigorous accounting and transparent management.
