Ukraine wins first match in U16 EuroBasket Championship

The Ukrainian national basketball team has won its first match versus Lithuania - 78 to 61 - at the Under-16 European Basketball Championship that officially kicked off in Kyiv on Thursday, NRCU reports.
At the championship held in the Sports Place, 16 national teams are to play a total of 72 matches. Vice-Premier Oleksandr Vilkul said at the opening ceremony that new European stars would rise at this championship which would be a major international event preceding the FIBA EuroBasket 2015. He noted more than 5,000 parentless and poor children and children with special needs would visit the championship free of charge. «We are implementing this social initiative together with the UNICEF, the Basketball Federation of Ukraine, the EuroBasket 2015 local organizing committee, and charitable organizations,» Vilkul said. The opening ceremony was attended by FIBA Europe Commissioner Reuven Virovnik, who wished the best of luck to all the competitors. «I hope that all the games that will follow in the next ten days will be played in a fair and competitive manner and will be spectacular,» Virovnik said. President Viktor Yanukovych greeted the teams and organizers. «Millions of fans in many countries will be watching the matches of this exciting European tournament. Ukraine is doing its utmost for the development and promotion of this spectacular sport and preparing for hosting the 2015 European Basketball Championship. I hope that this championship will be hosted in a highly professional manner and that the fans will enjoy uncompromising and fair competition,» Yanukovych said in his greeting message.
