Yanukovych expects Odesa Film Festival to take its rightful place in European cultural space

Today President Viktor Yanukovych greeted the festival’s participants, organizers and guests, NRCU reports.
«I believe that the diverse program of this film forum will promote cooperation among filmmakers across the world, because the screen is a universal tool of international dialogue. I hope this festival will be an important event and will occupy a prominent place in the European cultural space. I hope the new Ukrainian films will captivate the audience with their originality and high artistic value,» reads the President’s greeting. During the festival, which is to last through July 20th, 11 films will compete for the grand prix - the Golden Duke statuette and the money prize of 15,000 dollars. Notably, according to Odessa Film Festival President Victoria Tigipko, most film directors competing at this year’s festival are newcomers, but starring in their films are a number of leading European, American, and Asian actors. Four Ukrainian feature films and twelve shorts will compete for the National Film Award. The centerpiece and potential winner in the national shorts competition program is the documentary Nuclear Waste directed by Myroslav Slaboshpytsky. During the opening ceremony, the famous European art-house film director Emir Kusturica will receive the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. After the official part, Kusturica and his No Smoking Orchestra will give an open concert. The festival jury is headed by the Ukrainian media manager Oleksandr Rodniansky. Traditionally, the winner in the international competition will be chosen by the audience. Last year, the Grand-Prix went to the British director Rufus Norris for his film Broken.
