Argentina Corn Shipments to China on the Rise

As of June 30, 2026, shipments to China from Argentina in 2025/26 (Oct-Sep) are the largest ever and highlight a new chapter in China’s efforts to diversify its grain import base. Agencia Maritima Nabsa S. A. (NABSA) sailed vessel data shows that COFCO International, China’s largest state-owned agricultural conglomerate and food processor, has chartered more than 600,000 metric tons of corn since April 2026. China has historically imported little corn from Argentina, sourcing the bulk of its imports in recent years from Brazil, the United States, and Ukraine. Argentina’s lengthy absence from the China corn market was mostly caused by a complex phytosanitary approval process. The countries agreed to new export protocols in 2024 but there were virtually no shipments in 2024/2025. Both a smaller Argentina corn crop and weaker import demand in China likely reduced the benefits of market access. In 2025/26, however, bilateral trade has picked up. While small relative to Argentina’s overall corn exports to date, export volumes to China are climbing quickly — reaching well past the gains of initial access. Competitive Argentine bids are likely playing a role in spurring purchases — export prices averaged $10–15/metric ton (ton) lower than competitors in recent months. Larger corn shipments fit into a pattern of increasing bilateral trade across agricultural commodities, with China purchasing notable amounts of soybeans, wheat, and barley from Argentina in the past year. Whether the pattern will hold is less clear. Large corn supplies from Brazil’s second corn crop, trade negotiations between China and the United States, and more modest China corn demand all present potential headwinds for Argentine exports in the months ahead.
