IOM: More vulnerable migrants detained in Libya return home

09.01.2018 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Around 180 Nigerian nationals detained within Libya, were flown home on this week Monday, UN Radio says referring to IOM (UN migration agency) report. As to the report, this is the second such flight of the year organized by the IOM. Thus, the so-called Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme, had already organized a flight on this year Jan 1, which helped 142 returnees leave Libya for Gambia. As to the report, within last year, nearly 20,000 stranded Third Country Nationals were given assistance to leave the area around the Libyan capital, Tripoli. It is to be admitted, the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix has identified more than 432,000 migrants within Libya, and the overall figure is estimated to be between 700,000 and 1 million. Shocking reports about rampant migrant abuse and squalid conditions within multiple detention centres last year, have finally led to a major reassessment of the measures being taken to tackle people going along the central Mediterranean migration route, through Libya to Europe.
